Alexander Lawson Scrapbooks of Engravings

Overview Alexander Lawson, engraver, died in 1846, leaving behind a great quantity of his own and other artist's work. His daughters, Malvinia and Mary, constructed a scrapbook filled with these artworks, which they donated to the Academy. Scope and Contents In the infancy of the Academy, curators appointed a member to act as unpaid librarian who had very little authority to make plans and policies. In general the library was administered thru the members as a whole. ANSP Petitions and Resolutions Papers

Scope and Contents These petitions and resolutions are close pieces, possibly written by the person proposing the action, as a note for the secretary when copying his minutes. Most of them are transcribed into the Minutes of the Academy but oftentimes changed in wording or intent. The petitions number only four and were made mostly to the legislature of Pennsylvania, or to some branch of the Federal Government, their inclusive dates being 1837-1876. ANSP Physics and Chemistry Section Papers

Scope and Contents

A petition signed by eleven members of the Academy was presented, requesting permission to set np a physics and chemistry section. This request was granted by the Council, Feb. 13, 1877. One meeting was held on March 2nd and a memo sent to the Academy signed by H. C. Lewis as temporary recorder, announcing the second Thrusday for monthly meetings. There is no evidence that any other meeting was held, nor that the group was formally organized.

The rough minutes of the secretary are scattered entries from 1850-70, written by Powel, Rand, Moss and Howell.

Overview Charles Eastwick Smith (1820-1900) was an engineer and inventor involved in railroad, ironworks and steel. His interest in botany led him to membership at the Academy of Natural Sciences where he held several positions from 1851 until his death. Over the years Smith compiled an herbarium of specimens found within 15 miles of Philadelphia, which he bequeathed to the Academy. Scope and Contents Philadelphia businessman and president of the Tacomy Chemical Works, he joined the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1847. In 1867, when the trustees of the building fund were making a concerted effort to get money for the new building, Charles Lennig donated to the Academy some chrome ore lands in Chester County.
